Battery life used to be the ceiling on IoT visibility. You could deploy the most accurate RFID and sensing infrastructure in the world, but if your devices needed constant servicing or replacement, your operational continuity suffered. That constraint is quietly disappearing.

Advances in ultra-low-power hardware and event-based firmware are fundamentally changing the calculus. Devices no longer report on a fixed interval. They stay silent until something meaningful happens — a movement, a temperature deviation, an unexpected dwell time, a handoff event. The result is that power consumption drops dramatically without sacrificing data quality. In many deployments, device lifespan now matches asset lifespan.

This matters more than it sounds. When you no longer have to plan around battery replacement cycles, your infrastructure decisions change. Asset tagging strategies change. The economics of large-scale deployments in harsh or distributed environments change. Sectors like automotive, cold chain, and industrial manufacturing — where assets move across facilities, borders, and hands — are the first to feel this shift.

The connectivity side is catching up. Cat 1bis is gaining traction as a practical middle ground where LTE-M and NB-IoT coverage has been inconsistent. For distributed supply chains operating across multiple regions, this is not a minor detail. Reliable cross-border connectivity is what separates a visibility system that works in a controlled environment from one that holds up in the real world.

The infrastructure is maturing. The question for most organizations now is whether their data architecture is ready to absorb what these longer-lived, always-on devices are going to generate.
